It’s Sunday, and I think we need a little more music!
Most of us are familiar with Schubert’s “Ave Maria.” It’s a lovely setting of the text, and was even featured in the first Disney “Fantasia” movie. But do you know the “other” one? The French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) got the great idea to set a beautiful melody to J.S. Bach’s first prelude from his “Well-Tempered Clavier.” Gounod was known for his operas, songs, and church music.
Below, find two links - the first is to the original Bach prelude; the second is Gounod’s setting of Ave Maria.
As Bach wrote at the bottom of all his manuscripts - soli deo gloria - “only to the glory of God”!
